LEONARDO CELEBRATES ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY AROUND THE WORLD
During 2017–2018, we invite you to participate in our 18-month-long celebration of Leonardo’s 50th anniversary. Half a century ago, kinetic artist and astronautical pioneer Frank Malina set out to solve the needs of artists and scientists working across disciplines by using the “new media” of the time—offset print publishing. Leonardo represented a unique vision that served as an international channel of communication among artists, with emphasis on the writings of artists using science and developing technologies in their work.
Today documenting and capturing the creative innovators and provocateurs of culture is not enough. If media is the messenger, then Leonardo must expand its scope to represent the unique works and challenges we face in the 21st century. As a network of networks, Leonardo is reimagining the next 50 years. We invite you to come along with us on this journey of rediscovery and reinvention. See the list of upcoming 50th anniversary events at <leonardo.info/50th-anniversary>.
HELP LEONARDO REIMAGINE THE FUTURE: PROJECT DELPHI
We invite you to share with us in Project Delphi, a yearlong community engagement project of design thinking. Collaborate with Leonardo in thinking through the challenges of the 21st century and guiding us in designing our future. Led by social practice artist Scott Trent, Project Delphi is an open conversation you can participate in by going to <leonardo.info/project-delphi> or by sharing socially with the hashtag #Leo50.

NEW IN LEONARDO BOOK SERIES: MAKING SENSE: COGNITION, COMPUTING, ART, AND EMBODIMENT BY SIMON PENNY
In Making Sense, Simon Penny proposes that internalist conceptions of cognition have minimal purchase on embodied cognitive practices. Much of the cognition involved in arts practices remains invisible under such a paradigm. Penny argues that the mind-body dualism of Western humanist philosophy is inadequate for addressing performative practices. Ideas of cognition as embodied and embedded provide a basis for the development of new ways of speaking about the embodied and situated intelligences of the arts. Penny argues this perspective is particularly relevant to media arts practices. Find out more at <mitpress.mit.edu/books/making-sense>. [End Page 552]
CALL FOR PAPERS: ART AND ATOMS
The modern world of chemistry is vast and its connection to art strong. From nanocars and extraterrestrial materials to DNA origami and bio-fuels, chemistry, like art, expresses its transformative, material essence. Chemistry’s unique connection to art—a science simultaneously steeped in abstraction and application, process and product—is the focus of this special section. We especially seek submissions related to topics on the cutting edge of chemistry, including nanoscience, synthetic biology, fuel cells and neurochemistry. We encourage artists, scientists, engineers and scholars exploring the connection between chemistry and art to submit artwork with artist’s statement or manuscripts. The deadline for submissions is 31 December 2017. Visit <leonardo.info/opportunity/call-for-papers-art-and-atoms>.

ATTEND A LASER NEAR YOU!
What do nanotechnology, biological matter, big data, 3D printing and telecommunications have to do with art? Come to a Leonardo Art Science Evening Rendezvous (LASER) near you to find out! Founded by Piero Scaruffi in January 2008, LASERs are now presented in over a dozen locales in the United States, Canada and Europe. Each LASER gathering features 10- to 20-minute talks on art/science topics and the opportunity for attendees to network with cutting-edge artists, scientists and researchers in an informal setting. Leonardo is proud to add San Jose State University to the LASER Talks community. See <leonardo.info/laser-talks> for locations and dates.
