LEONARDO CELEBRATES ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY AROUND THE WORLD

During 2017–2018, we invite you to participate in our 18-month-long celebration of Leonardo’s 50th anniversary. Half a century ago, kinetic artist and astronautical pioneer Frank Malina set out to solve the needs of artists and scientists working across disciplines by using the “new media” of the time—offset print publishing. Leonardo represented a unique vision that served as an international channel of communication among artists, with emphasis on the writings of artists using science and developing technologies in their work.

Today documenting and capturing the creative innovators and provocateurs of culture is not enough. If media is the messenger, then Leonardo must expand its scope to represent the unique works and challenges we face in the 21st century. As a network of networks, Leonardo is reimagining the next 50 years. We invite you to come along with us on this journey of rediscovery and reinvention. LEONARDO RECAP AT ISEA 2017: 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION LAUNCH

On 11 June, Leonardo launched its 50th anniversary celebrations at the ISEA 2017 Conference in Manizales, Colombia. Leonardo is humbly grateful for the warm welcome from the City of Manizales; the Universidad de Caldas students, staff and Rector Felipe César Londoño López; the Imagen Fest team; ISEA Board and our 50th Anniversary Committee led by Nina Czegledy. Throughout the conference, the Leonardo community gathered to celebrate, experience and challenge the issues related to Bio-Creation and Peace. They also gathered seven LASER Hosts including Carlos Caste llanos (Kansas), Jill Scott (Zürich), Jiayi Young (Davis), Jane Chang Mi (Santa Barbara), Nina Czegledy (Toronto, Montreal) and Annick Bureaud (Paris).

NEW IN LEONARDO BOOK SERIES: MAKING SENSE: COGNITION, COMPUTING, ART, AND EMBODIMENT BY SIMON PENNY

In Making Sense, Simon Penny proposes that internalist conceptions of cognition have minimal purchase on embodied cognitive practices. Much of the cognition involved in arts practices remains invisible under such a paradigm. Penny argues that the mind-body dualism of Western humanist philosophy is inadequate for addressing performative practices. Ideas of cognition as embodied and embedded provide a basis for the development of new ways of speaking about the embodied and situated intelligences of the arts. CALL FOR PAPERS: ART AND ATOMS

The modern world of chemistry is vast and its connection to art strong. From nanocars and extraterrestrial materials to DNA origami and bio-fuels, chemistry, like art, expresses its transformative, material essence. Chemistry’s unique connection to art—a science simultaneously steeped in abstraction and application, process and product—is the focus of this special section. We especially seek submissions related to topics on the cutting edge of chemistry, including nanoscience, synthetic biology, fuel cells and neurochemistry. We encourage artists, scientists, engineers and scholars exploring the connection between chemistry and art to submit artwork with artist’s statement or manuscripts.
