Personalia 2008

We herewith present Monatshefte's annual issue of Personalia. Personalia contains information concerning staff members and departmental structures for the academic year 2008–2009 and information concerning student enrollments and degrees granted for the academic year 2007–2008. Personalia listings are prepared from material submitted by departments. Monatshefte cannot be responsible for factual errors in the submitted materials. The deadline for returning this year's Personalia forms was June 30; reminders were sent out after that date by email, and we included information that came in as late as the beginning of September. Departments that did not submit new information before we went to press are still listed—with an asterisk preceding the listing—using last year's information, but deleting statistics, leave and visitor information, and italicized names. Departments that were asterisked last year and did not respond again this year were dropped.

As of this issue, Personalia is 71 years old. Personalia made its debut in Monatshefte volume 29 (1937), where—spread out between the November and December issues—44 institutions were listed. In 1938 that number dropped to 29, but rose to 72 in 1939. These first few issues were rather descriptive, including not only a list of the faculty, but also a survey of the sorts of graduate seminars offered. Personalia has been a part of Monatshefte ever since—with the excpetion of 1943, when the Personalia section was not included.

The format and contents of Personalia have changed dramatically over the course of seven decades. Early sections listed full-time faculty, changes in faculty, the number of students (both at the undergraduate and graduate levels) in the department, as well as graduate students working toward Ph.D. degrees who would likely finish during the next year and hence be available for teaching positions. Only years later were completed dissertations listed. The 1942 issue, as well as several other Personalia listings of that period, listed faculty members on leave to the army or other government agencies. By the late 1940s Personalia had grown to cover over 100 institutions; in 1968 it listed over 200. The Personalia issue for 1957 introduced what became the standard format for listing programs (a two-column layout listing faculty by rank), but it wasn't until 1973 that the type of department (e.g. German or Foreign Language) and the highest degree offered were listed. Canadian programs were first listed in 1964, and for a few years in the 1960s other "overseas" schools (e.g. the University of Auckland, New Zealand; the University of Queensland, Australia; and the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa) were also a part of Personalia.

The 1970s saw a variety of special surveys: German Cultural Studies (1976), GDR Studies (1977), Women in German (1978), Graduate Programs (1979). Then, in 1980, Personalia established its current format, including the departmental statistics and the statistical summary, the necrology, the listing of new hires, etc.

The code following the departmental address designates departmental structure and the highest degree offered in German in that department: G = German (Germanic) only or with minor languages; G+ = German plus another language not considered [End Page 560] minor, usually Russian; L = German section of a (foreign) language (literature) department; O = no degree obtainable in German; B = bachelor's degree; M = master's degree; D = doctor's degree. If a + follows the degree designation, a higher degree is obtainable outside the regular program.

Names given in italics identify visitors (followed by the parenthetical notation [vi]) and new appointments. Refer to special listings for information concerning temporary or permanent st tus and regular or former affiliation. Again, the accuracy of this information depends on the submissions by the departments.

An asterisk following a name indicates the chairperson or head of the department, including (foreign) language departments. A double asterisk following a name indicates the representative, if any, of the German section of a (foreign) language department.

Departmental members on leave are designated by the parenthetical notation (lv), followed by a semester (Roman) or quarter (Arabic) designation. If these designations are absent, leave is for the entire year. The statistical table at the conclusion of a German department listing gives the following information for the preceding year:

BC BA/BS awarded in culture
BE German BA/BS majors enrolled
BG BA/BS awarded in German studies
BL BA/BS awarded in linguistics / language
BLi BA/BS awarded in literature
BM German BA/BS minors awarded
BO BA/BS awarded in other German concentrations
BR German BA / BS minors registered
BT BA/BS awarded in teaching
MAw MAs awarded in German
ME MA students enrolled
MT MAs awarded in teaching
PAw Ph.D.s awarded
PE Ph.D. students enrolled
PM Ph.D. minors awarded
PR Ph.D. minors registered
PX preliminary examinations passed
SF support as fellows (including outside support, e.g. DAAD)
SO support by other means (e.g. partial scholarships, tuition remission)
SP support as project or research assistants
ST support as teaching assistants

Departments without statistical lines either had none to report or did not submit them. [End Page 561]

Visitors

The institution given in parentheses is the visitor's regular affiliation. Unless otherwise noted, the appointment is for the academic year. Semesters are noted by Roman, quarters by Arabic numerals. As far as possible, we have avoided listing appointments that are "visiting" in name only, i.e. in cases where the colleague has no regular affiliation elsewhere.

Summary

The statistical summary includes only those departments listed in the preceding Personalia section that sent statistics in on time, i.e. all departments except the asterisked ones. We count the asterisked departments only in the total number of departments (Table I) and for our statistics concerning faculty members (Table II). Departments that have no active faculty members have been removed from the listings of individual departments. We have included them in Table I in the total count of reporting departments, indicating that their faculty head count is zero.

Following the sliding trend from the previous year, our numbers for institutions granting degrees in German are down. This year's Personalia list includes a slightly fewer number of departments, for a total of 355—10 fewer departments than last year's. In addition to a lower response rate among schools continuously listed in Personalia, a few institutions which previously had been deleted from the listings were reinstated this year; these few additions helped to offset our low numbers overall. Many schools, [End Page 608] however, did not make statistical information available to us for publication. Our additional coverage is among departments which offer no degree in German. This year, one program reported being eliminated (U of Southern California).

Fortunately only 25 departments (23 in the U.S. and 2 in Canada) are asterisked this year because they failed to submit new information or their information was received too late to include in our analysis. This means that our statistical survey is based on approximately 92% of the departments currently listed, or a total of 330 departments (355 minus 25). Last year, 79 departments were asterisked. Some of those appear this year with staff listings and statistical information.

We continue to encourage departments to participate in our listings and surveys. Personalia represents our attempt to keep track of the whereabouts of our colleagues and of trends and developments within the profession in North America. We are doing what we can, but we cannot gather our information without the cooperation of others. As always, we encourage caution when interpreting these Personalia statistics; comparatively, this year's information offers us an even smaller summary of the current status of German Studies in North America. We spectulate that with a higher percentage of responses, we might have seen the numbers in our profession remain steady and / or grow from last year's totals.

Again, we thank all the institutions who did respond for helping us keep and publish the record of our profession.

Table II counts all active faculty members. Emeriti, retirees, and visitors are not counted, while faculty on leave is. This year we report an increase—probably due to the number of new hires and faculty promotions—in individual faculty and staff listings compared to last year (1436 as opposed to 1277, or 159 more). For Table II we have brought together professors with adjunct professors and school directors, associate professors with adjunct associate professors, and so on; we have made no attempt to identify part-timers and pro-rate their appointments. We urge caution when dealing with these statistics, as our statistical methods are not pure, and we remind our readers [End Page 609] once again that the colleges and universities who returned our questionnaires this year constitute a somewhat different sample from that of previous years.

A comparison of this year's faculty statistics with those of the last several years seems to suggest some trends worth noting. Of interest are trends concerning (1) the relative numbers of those in the upper ranks (associate professor and professor) and the lower ranks (assistant professor and "other"—for the most part lecturers and instructors), and (2) the relative numbers of men and women in the profession. While we had fewer departments contribute statistics this year, the distribution percentages between upper and lower ranks of faculty remained relatively static. We point to the following:

The number of faculty in the upper ranks seems to be stabilizing around 60%: six years ago 61% of the faculty and staff listed were at the upper ranks, five years ago it was 58%, four years ago it was just under 61%, three years ago the number sat above 61%. In the last two years that percentage remained just above 59%.

The gender gap in the upper ranks, which has decreased over the last years, generally continues to do so: women comprised 33% of the total in 1999, 2000, and 2001, 37% of the total both six and five years ago, 38% of the total four years ago, almost 39% of the total three years ago, and made up almost 40% of the total in 2006. This year female tenured faculty comprised about 41.2%.

According to this year's numbers, the gender gap in the lower ranks has remained statistically similar since last year, with women now compromising roughly 63% of the total. Women comprised 63% of the total eight years ago, 64% seven years ago, 60% six years ago, 63% five years ago, 61% four years ago, and 64% three years ago. In 2006, the percentage fell to 62.7%. For 2007, it continued its fall to just over 62%.

The closing of the gender gap in our profession is, however, most clearly expressed in the total number of women vs. men in the field. In 2006 we saw a .5% increase in the total number of women, resulting in near equality: 49.17% of our total listings were women, and 50.83% were men. In 2007, the numbers remained almost the same: 49.4% women and 50.6% men, signaling a slight increase in female faculty overall. This year the number of female faculty in the profession has actually overtaken the number of male faculty, with women making up 50.2% of the total.

Table III shows promotions to the ranks of professor and associate professor during the academic year 2007–2008. The numbers continue to be encouraging despite fewer statistics available to us—a grand total of 69 in both categories together. This number [End Page 610] is higher than the figures for the past three years: 2005 (47), 2006 (60), and 2007 (55). Based on the information we received this year, we cannot fully gauge whether there were more actual promotions to the rank of professor or associate professor; however, despite fewer departments in our analysis, overall numbers of faculty seemed to indicate an increase to approximately the levels seen in 2006. This year, men fared slightly better with promotions: 49.3% of the total promotions went to women, 50.7% to men.

2005 15 16 31 37 22 59 90

We report a total of 148 new appointments this year: 54 tenured or tenure-track positions, 94 temporary positions. This increase from last year can likely be attributed to the number of schools continually hiring new faculty. The percentage of tenured or tenure-track appointments among the total number was lower than last year. This year it was 36.5%, down from 39% last year, again probably due to the low response rate. The numbers of men and women securing permanent positions is slightly higher. However, the number of women receiving temporary positions is greater than that of men, a trend which has increased markedly this year and has remained steady over the last six years.

Because of differences in our overall coverage, the changes in enrollment statistics are always difficult to interpret. Our totals this year are higher than last year for all enrollments across the board. We also show an increase in enrollment in graduate M.A. programs and in graduate Ph.D. programs (although graduate Ph.D. programs tend to be the most consistent in returning our surveys). The numbers given for Canadian institutions with graduate Ph.D. enrollments are higher (67 this year as opposed to 53 last year). The percentage of minors among our total undergraduate enrollment (majors plus minors) also increased slightly. [End Page 611]

The number of students completing B.A. degrees is higher than last year by 302—which mirrors the increase in enrollment numbers from the previous table. The number of M.A. degrees awarded is up from last year, and the number of Ph.D. degrees awarded this year has increased following last year's trend. Also, fewer candidates took preliminary exams this year. M.A. degrees in education / teaching of German experienced a major decrease from the previous year, returning to 9 degrees from 21 last year. Canadian B.A. degrees were also down (89 this year from 124 last year). As with the enrollment figures, these numbers are difficult to interpret because of changes in our overall coverage and this year's overall response.

This year our figures indicate that 88% of the graduate students who receive support hold teaching assistantships, project / research assistantships, or fellowships, holding in the high eighty percentile from 85.1% last year and roughly 89% in 2006. Although this statistic does fluctuate, it has remained fairly constant for the last decade. Canadian institutions granted fewer fellowships to graduate students this year, down to 22 this year from last year's number of 28. However, with most of the larger departments included in this year's analysis, we see that the overall numbers have remained consistent regarding graduate support. Again, we urge caution when interpreting these numbers, as not all departments offering graduate support provided us with statistics. [End Page 612]
