The ruins of Presidio San Luis de las Amarillas stand about a mile from Menard, Texas, on the northern bank of the San Saba River. A mixture of Spanish-period remains and the vestiges of a Great-Depression-era reconstruction effort, the site is open to visitors under the management of Menard County. The 128th Annual Meeting of the TSHA, held at the Texas A&M Conference Center in College Station February 28 to March 2, 2024, was a tremendous success! The 2024 San Jacinto Patrons Dinner and San Jacinto Symposium will take place in Houston, Texas, on Saturday, April 27. This event promises an engaging exploration of Texas history centering upon the Battle of San Jacinto. Now in its 23rd year, the Symposium is the premier conference dedicated to the era of the Texas Revolution. With a mission to foster public awareness and scholarly discussions surrounding the Mexican national era in Texas (1821–1835), the Texas Revolution (1835–1836), the Battle of San Jacinto (1836), and the Republic of Texas (1836–1845), this symposium delves deep into the historical transitions that shaped Texas as we know it today. It begins with the Patrons Dinner, to be held at the Coronado Club on Friday, April 26. All guests will be treated to cocktails, a fine dinner, and a wonderful presentation by featured speaker Carolina Castillo Crimm. Saturday’s program will be in the Jesse H. [End Page 453] Jones Theater at the San Jacinto Battleground. Beginning with registration at 8 a.m., the day’s events include presentations by Jeff S. Dunn, Donald S. Erazier, Gregg Dimmick, Raul A. Ramos, and Carolina Castillo Crimm. A battlefield tour will follow the lunch break. For more details, see the website at https://sanjacintosymposium.com/.
Texas History Day is coming! If you or someone you know is interested in judging for the main even on Saturday, April 20, 2024, email thd@tshaonline. org. This is the biggest day of the year for many young Texas historians, and some lucky winners will go to Washington, DC, to compete at National History Day during June 2024. This year’s theme is “Turning Points in History.” Middle and high school students submit all sorts of exhibits for Texas History Day, and there are a growing number of chapters of Texas Historians for the younger students in many schools across Texas. Many institutions of higher education in the Lone Star State have chapters of the Webb Society for undergraduate students. If you are interested in hosting or sponsoring a chapter of either organization, please contact the TSHA Director of Education, Lisa Berg, at lisa. berg@tshaonline.org.

The Library of Congress (LOC) in Washington, DC, granted Angelo State University $69,999 to fund a project that will create information resources focusing on history for K-12 schools and academic programs. Angelo State will use the grant to fund “All History is Local: Celebrating the People of West Texas.” Faculty and students in disciplines related to arts and humanities, such as history and political science, will work together to combine LOC digital archives with Angelo State’s collections to create teaching and learning materials, including stories and an interactive map. The resulting digital resources will feature the [End Page 454] lived experiences of communities of color, specifically incorporating national and global themes and stories into West Texas’ cultural narrative. It is intended that the project will facilitate lesson-planning by helping teachers incorporate digital primary source materials into their curriculum. Angelo State students and faculty assisting with the project will also host an outreach event and workshop to support K-12 teachers and faculty who teach courses in Angelo State’s ethnic studies minor.

Staff members will be conducting oral history interviews and scanning documents and pictures at Levi Jordan Plantation on two Saturdays in April and again in May 2024. They have times available for donor appointments from 10 am to 2 pm. The Jordan Plantation centers on a two-story Greek Revival-style house that was the headquarters of a large-scale agricultural operation develop with slave labor. Jordan moved his family and enslaved workers to Texas to grow sugar and cotton on the San Bernard River during the late 1840s. The site highlights the multiple perspectives and evolving relationships of those who lived and worked on the land during the 19th century. Paid admission to the Levi Jordan Plantation also allows visitors to tour the nearby Varner-Hogg Plantation. For information, see https://thc.texas.gov/events/scanning-oral-history-day-4.

Book Notes
Frederick W. Gooding Jr., Sylviane Ngandu-Kalenga Greensword, and [End Page 456] Marcellis R. Perkins have published A History to Remember: TCU in Purple, White, and Black with TCU Press (2023). TCU celebrated its sesquicentennial in 2023, and this volume of essays (written by the three authors listed on the title page) reviews the racial aspects of the institution’s history in an effort to promote ”racial healing” (p. xiii). Readers will enjoy eight profusely illustrated chapters spanning the century and a half of TCU’s operations, as well as seven appendices that contain related primary material. Substantial annotations will guide interested readers in further exploration of any of the engaging topics discussed in this work, which helps to complete the telling of TCU’s history.
If you have not already visited the site, or even if you have, you need to read A History of the Waco Mammoth Site: In Pursuit of a National Monument, by Calvin B. Smith and David O. Lintz (Waco: 1845Books, 2023). Published under an imprint of Baylor University Press, with funding from the F. M. and Gloria Young Foundation, this colorful work provides information on mammoths around the word and how they were uncovered in Central Texas. The latter is a tale of almost four decades of hard work, capped by the site being designated as a national monument in 2015. Visitors today will see engaging displays focusing on about two dozen mammoths who were overwhelmed by a flood, as well as the remains of a variety of other animals found there. Within the context of the history of national monuments, this is a unique story that deserved to be told.
Anne Elise Urrutia tells the story of her great-grandfather, Aureliano Urrutia, and the beautiful garden he built in Miraflores: San Antonio’s Mexican Garden of Memory (Trinity University Press, 2022). Fleeing the Mexican Revolution in 1914, the Mexico City physician settled in San Antonio, where he settled close to modern-day Brackenridge Park. He employed gardeners and many artists and artisans to create a landscape of Mexican plants and artwork, as well as some that reflected the influence of European culture. The remarkable estate deteriorated long ago, but his great-granddaughter used many sources to produce this moving memorial to the doctor’s beloved creation. The result is of course a compelling story, but it is also a good history of cultural persistence and synthesis in San Antonio during the twentieth century.
