Personalia 2020
We herewith present Monatshefte's annual issue of Personalia. Personalia contains information concerning staff members and departmental structures for the academic year 2020–2021 and information concerning student enrollments and degrees granted for the academic year 2019–2020. Personalia listings are prepared solely from material submitted by departments. Monatshefte cannot be responsible for factual errors in the submitted materials. The deadline for returning this year's Personalia forms was September 8th; reminders were sent out after that date by email, and we included information that came in as late as the end of October. Departments that did not submit new information before we went to press are still listed—with an asterisk preceding the listing—using last year's information, but deleting statistics, leave and visitor information, and italicized names. Departments that were listed with an asterisk last year and did not respond again this year were dropped. If your department is not listed in Personalia 2020, please reach out to the editorial staff.
Personalia made its debut 83 years ago in Monatshefte Volume 29 (1937), where—spread out between the November and December issues—44 institutions were listed. In 1938, that number dropped to 29, but rose to 72 in 1939. These first few issues were rather descriptive, including not only a list of the faculty but also a survey of the sorts of graduate seminars offered. Personalia has been a part of Monatshefte ever since—with the exception of 1943, when the section was not included.
The format and contents of Personalia have changed dramatically over the course of eight decades. Early sections listed full-time faculty, changes in faculty, the number of students (both at the undergraduate and graduate levels) in the department, as well as graduate students working toward Ph.D. degrees who would likely finish during the next year and hence be available for teaching positions. Only years later were completed dissertations listed. The 1942 issue, as well as several other Personalia listings of that period, listed faculty members on leave to the army or other government agencies. By the late 1940s Personalia had grown to cover over 100 institutions; in 1968 it listed over 200. The Personalia issue for 1957 introduced what became the standard format for listing programs (the two-column layout listing faculty by rank), but it was not until 1973 that the type of department (e.g., German or Foreign Language) and the highest degree offered were listed. Canadian programs were first listed in 1964, and for a few years in the 1960s other "overseas" schools (e.g., the University of Auckland, New Zealand; the University of Queensland, Australia; and the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa) were also a part of Personalia. The 1970s saw a variety of special surveys: German Cultural Studies (1976), GDR Studies (1977), Women in German (1978), Graduate Programs (1979). Then, in 1980, Personalia established its current format, including the departmental statistics and the statistical summary, the necrology, the listing of new hires, etc.
This issue of "Personalia" differs from its recent predecessors in several respects. As noted in issue 112.4, we were unable to collect and store data in the same manner as in past years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We consequently switched to an [End Page A1] entirely online data collection method and delayed the section, which would ordinarily have appeared in issue 112.4 and now appears as an appendix online and concurrently with the publication of issue 113.1. Thus, although this section appears in January of 2021, it is "Personalia 2020," and the data reflect the state of departments and programs in academic year 2019/2020. Hires, promotions, retirements, and deaths that occurred in the latter half of 2020 are not yet reported. Furthermore, the shift to online data collection substantially increased the percentage of departments that responded. While we welcome this change, it means that the summary data section presents an artificially rosy picture: there appear to be more faculty members in German Studies in the United States and Canada than last year. Most unfortunately, both the list of programs that have closed or no longer offer German in the summary below and the grim job listings for 2020 suggest that the pandemic following on decades of cuts to the humanities and to higher education has already led to fewer positions and fewer programs or departments than in the past. It will likely take the statistics we report here a few iterations of "Personalia" to reflect these trends.
The code following the departmental address designates departmental structure and the highest degree offered in German in that department: G = German (Germanic) subjects only; G+ = German plus another language, usually Russian, or several other languages; L = German section of a (foreign) language (literature) department; O = no degree obtainable in German; B = bachelor's degree; M = master's degree; D = doctoral degree.
Names given in italics identify visitors (followed by the parenthetical notation [vi]) or new appointments. Refer to special listings for information concerning temporary or permanent status and regular or former affiliation. Again, the accuracy of this information depends on the submissions by the departments.
An asterisk following a name indicates the chairperson or head of the department, including (foreign) language departments teaching more subjects than solely German. A double asterisk following a name indicates the representative, if any, of the German section of a (foreign) language department.
Departmental members on leave are designated by the parenthetical notation (lv), followed by a semester (Roman) or quarter (Arabic) designation. If these designations are absent, leave is for the entire year. The statistical table at the conclusion of a German department listing gives the following information for the preceding year: Departments without statistical lines either had none to report or did not submit them.

Visitors
An institution in parentheses is the visitor's regular affiliation. That information is not always provided. Unless otherwise noted, the appointment is for the academic year. Semesters are noted in Roman, quarters in Arabic numerals. As far as possible, we avoid listing appointments that are 'visiting' in name only, i.e., in cases where the colleagues has no regular affiliation elsewhere.

SUMMARY
The basis for our listings and presentation depends on participating departments. Personalia remains the most comprehensive attempt to keep track of our colleagues and frame trends within the profession in the U.S. and Canada. But this attempt is only possible through the cooperation of faculty and staff at the departments in both countries. As in years past, we insist on caution in interpreting the statistics presented here. We speculate that with a higher percentage of responding departments from year to year, we might see clearer trends in the numbers of our profession.
The statistical summary includes only those departments listed in the preceding Personalia section that sent in statistics before we went to press, i.e., all departments except the ones listed with an asterisk. Not all departments submitted enrollment figures, a trend that is increasing as programs don't always make this information public. We count asterisked departments only in the total number of departments (Table I). Departments that have no active faculty members will be removed from the listing of individual departments in the following year's Personalia. Alma College, Elizabethtown College, Hendrix College, Linfield College, Mansfield University of [End Page A38] Pennsylvania, and Rider University reported that their German programs have been suspended. We have included them in Table I in the total count of reporting departments, indicating that their faculty head count is zero.
Departments
Our department list includes 238 departments, 6 fewer than were listed in last year's Personalia. This year, six U.S. institutions whose data we included last year did not respond (marked in the listings with an asterisk). This means that our statistical survey is based on approximately 97% of the departments currently listed, or a total of 232 departments (238 minus 6). Last year, we interpreted data from 199 departments (244 total listed; 45 departments did not submit data in 2019).
Faculty
Table II counts all active faculty members. Emeriti, retirees, and visitors are not counted, while faculty on leave are. For Table II we have combined the statistics for professors with those of adjunct professors and school directors, associate professors with adjunct associate professors, and so on. We have made no attempt to identify part-time positions and prorate these appointments. We urge caution when dealing with these statistics, as we know that the given numbers cannot be read as a complete data set. [End Page A39]
This year we report an increase in individual faculty and staff listings compared to last year (1103 as opposed to 996), in large part due to an increase in reporting departments. There were overall increases in both genders. The gender gap in the upper ranks of professors and associate professors, which had been decreasing, holds fairly steady this year: women comprised 33% of the total in 2000 and just over 43% of the total in 2010, while the percentage has remained near 46% since 2014, adding up to 48,5% in 2020.
We have noted in past years that the gender gap in the profession has been closing and we have even made the observation that the gender ratio may be beginning to reverse. This year's overall distribution—54.2% women and 45.8% men—suggests that this is again the case. We want to point out, however, that the gender-specific percentiles in the higher and lower ranks are still quite far apart.
Promotions
Table III shows promotions to the ranks of professor and associate professor during the academic year 2019–2020. This year's total of 39 promotions represents an increase from last year and is three promotion above the average for the last four years. While the promotions to full professor have decreased, the number of promotions to associate professor have increased. As with the promotions to associate professor, in the last ten years, more women than men have been promoted professor.
New Appointments
This year we report a total of 71 new appointments: 22 tenured or tenure-track and 49 temporary positions. Despite an overall decreasing number of schools reporting (versus the higher percentage of listed schools sending data noted above), this is a great increase over last year's numbers, and also above the average of 77 for the four previous years. The number of permanent hires has remained about the same in the last few years, below the average of the preceding decade (24.1), but in 2020 it has [End Page A40] been 25 for the first time since 2017. The number of new appointments for temporary positions comprise 68%. The total number of hires this year increased by 16 compared to last year. A gender gap is evident and historically present in new hires in both categories, with women comprising 62% of new hires this year.
Enrollments
This year we saw an increase in the number of undergraduate majors enrolled as compared to 2019, as well as an increase in undergraduate minors. However, changes in enrollment are always difficult to interpret due to the variation in departments reporting numeric statistics from year to year and the fact that a number of universities do not track enrollments in these majors and minors.
Like last year, the number of undergraduate minors is greater than majors, and the ratio of majors to minors is widening: there was a difference of only 30 students in 2014 but of 782 students this year. This further reverses the previous norm of significantly more undergraduate majors than minors, which was maintained until 2012. Although there appears to be a general trend of decreasing graduate enrollments since a high in 2008 (460 M.A. students and 801 Ph.D.
students), this year's figures for graduate student enrollments have generally increased since last year. After last year's significant drop, this year's numbers allow us to be optimistic that an upward trend in the numbers of graduate student enrollments may be taking place; conversely, the higher numbers may simply be a side effect of the greater numbers of departments reporting data.
Degrees Granted and Prelims Passed
This year, 107 more students completed B.A. degrees in North America than last year. There were however 11 fewer M.A.s awarded than last year. The number of Ph.D.s granted (65) is higher than last year, and below the four-year-average (74,25) and it is lower than the ten-year low from 2011 (67). Graduate Ph.D. programs tend [End Page A41] to be the most consistent in returning our surveys, therefore the interpretation of these numbers is perhaps more accurate than the numbers for undergraduate degrees. Nevertheless, the numbers in general are difficult to interpret because of variation in response rate.
Graduate Student Support
According to this year's figures, the total number of graduate students receiving any kind of support has increased. Overall, every graduate student is likely to receive some kind of support by holding teaching assistantships, project/research assistantships, or (partial) fellowships. This high extent of support is disrupting a general decrease in this number since 2016. Although there has been a downward trend of support positions over the past decade, the increase this year appears to be roughly proportional to the increase in total numbers submitted this year. However, as the data we receive does not differentiate between year-long and semester-long support, the numbers reported likely still indicate mixed support—fellowship and TAships or a combination of TAships and other support. Again, we urge caution when interpreting these numbers, as not all departments offering graduate support provided us with statistics.
We thank all participating institutions for helping us to record and publish this 2020 edition of Personalia. If your department is not included in our statistics, we would like to hear from you. Please contact our office so you can be included in next year's collection of data. The success of Personalia depends on broad participation among departments—both big and small—and your cooperation is truly appreciated. [End Page A42]
