Maurice Scott was a participating artist in PCAP (Prison Creative Arts Project) through the University of Michigan. He is now pursuing a career as an artist and applying to a college fine arts program.

The mission of the Prison CreativeArts Project (PCAP) is to collaborate with incarcerated youth and adults, urban youth, and the formerly incarcerated to strengthen our community through creative expression.

Since 1990 PCAP has facilitated hundreds of workshops in the arts in Michigan high schools, juvenile facilities, and prisons. The project has curated 10 major exhibitions of art byMichigan prisoners and developed many other creative projects, working closely with educational and correctional institutions, arts organizations, family members of the incarcerated, and other community members.

PCAP’s process is guided by respect and a spirit of collaboration in which vulnerability, risk, and improvisation lead to discovery. They make possible spaces in which the voices and visions of the incarcerated can be expressed. They believe that everyone has the capacity to create art. Art is necessary for individual and societal growth, connection, and survival. Art should be accessible to all.
